Halloween Half Marathon

Last year after we finished the Halloween Half Brittany and I looked at each other and vowed we were going to do it again this year. We missed Kelsey and Jen, but we added Pam to our race crew. We grabbed an early bus so we could sit in the warm tent, rather than waiting out in the cold for a bus. It was so fun to look around at all of the crazies and their costumes. This is us waiting in our warm clothes for the start time.

About 6 weeks ago my left foot was really bothering me. Then we hiked Timpanogos and pretty much killed my foot. I had a slight stress fracture, and could hardly walk on my foot for days. I stopped running and doing Zumba, and could only do the elliptical, cycle, and weight training. Last week I ran 3 miles twice, but that was it. I was not prepared for this race at all. But I decided early on that it was a mental race rather than a physical one. I knew I had been doing enough cardio to be fine, but it was just whether or not my body would stay in one piece. I just wanted to beat 2 hours, and was hoping for a personal record.

The start was up at Sundance at 9 am.

It was freezing. Literally below 32 degrees. So for the sake of my hurt foot I was lucky that my feet were numb for about the first 4 miles. My hips were tightening up, but Ryan was a trooper and would stop and stretch with me every few miles. At about mile 8 was when my foot had a huge surge of pain. At that point I had to completely flip the switch that it was definitely a race of mind over body. Ryan was so good to encourage me and keep me going. We had to stay under a 9:00 mile to get the time I wanted, so he helped me stick to that even though my hips, knees and foot were killing me. But we finished! It was awesome. It was such a good race.

Final times:
Ryan 1:55:34 - 8:52 average minute mile - 16th in his division
Becca 1:55:38 - 8:52 average minute mile - 49th in her division - PR!
There were about 600 male participants, and about 1600 women. So we're pretty happy with our results!

I was so glad we did this, especially together. We were very sore all weekend, but it's so worth it. It was the last race of the season, so until the Spring we're all raced out.
